It has been a very cold couple of days here at Happy Trails. Many of our animals have been staying inside under heatlamps to keep warm. Hopefully the warm weather will come back, even if it is just for a day or two.
Cold weather, especially with freezing windchill, can be very dangerous for our outdoor pets. Please keep your animals safe.
Some tips for staying safe in this weather:
- Keep an eye out for frostbite on chickens. Their combs and wattles will start to turn black, especially on the tips.
- Also watch for frostbite on the tips of pig ears.
- It is very important to make sure animals have access to water. If there are no water heaters or heated buckets, it will feeze over very quickly in freezing temperatures. Make sure to remove all ice. Simply breaking ice on the surface won't help as it will refreeze right away.
Our great team of animal caregivers at Happy Trails have been working hard and bundling up to go outside and make sure the animals are well cared for. Above Domingo is staying warm under a heat lamp.
