A continuation of yesterday's interview, talking about the details of Ohio's new ballot initiative that will compliment Issue 2 and help outline some very basic animal-care standards.

Hey Ohio — we are slowly moving up in the world and starting to let go of our bottom-of-the-barrel ranking in regards to our animal cruelty laws here in Ohio! Good for us, and good for the animals too! Finally, a way we can work together to change the laws, thanks to Ohioans For Humane Farms!

FINALLY!!!!   A way that Ohioans can get together and do something about our laws which currently afford very little protection to Ohio's animals.  This new ballot initiative addresses stopping the cruel current practices of confinement in battery cages and gestation crates, prevents downer cows and other downed animal from entering our food production system, and helps outline humane euthanasia standards.  What a fantastic opportunity for Ohio's residents to bring our level of compassion up here in our state and to speak out together against animal abuse!

Pegasus Farm brings together people and horses in a unique way of healing through their many equestrian-based programs. Listen as the story unfolds of Happy Trails "Great Buffalo Rescue", and hear about the exciting details from the rescue workers who lived to tell about it!  Join the guys from The Bison Ranch: Bob Lindquist, Ed Goldner, and Greg Ellis; and also helping to tell the tale are Happy Trails rescue workers Sarah Aitken and Debbie McCourt.  This is a really great rescue story that you will be sure to want to hear!

There are many, many ways that animals work in the service of people. Sarah Aitken shares with us some ways that services animals enhance the lives of those who love them. We talk about animals in all varieties of service including hospital therapy animals, seizure dogs, military bomb-sniffing dogs, see-ing eye animals, and everything in between. Today Animal Emergency Rescue Crew worker and Board Member, Rob Willard, talks about the need for Happy Trails Amish Horse Retirement Program and shares some stories about horses from the Amish community that he helped haul to the safety of Happy Trails. He also discusses several of Ohio's horse slaughterhouse auctions, and how they are related to the Amish cultures.

Meet Ken McCort, proud adoptive dad to Bingo, the fiesty little mini-horse. As an Animal Behavior Specialist, Ken had his hands full with Bingo, who is thriving in his new herd of friends!

If you can’t physically get involved in animal rescue, here’s how to get involved with Happy Trails through various ways to help support the sanctuary. Review projects such as:

• collecting recyclables such as aluminum cans and ink cartridges - getting your school, business, favorite restaurant or bar to help collect these items
• tax deductible donations
• purchasing logo apparel
• donating items from our wish list such as hay, straw, grain and more
• collecting horse tack (how does this help, what type of horse tack do we accept
• animal sponsorships — helping to hand out newsletters and hang up fliers in your area, helping us spread the word about animals needing homes

We will mention all the ways to get involved with Happy Trails — reviewing the volunteer emergency crew, the regular weekend volunteers or weekday feeding volunteers, volunteers who set up booths at community events and meet and greet people, volunteers who give tours of the sanctuary, volunteers who help with hauling and transport of the animals, volunteers who work on our fundraisers, volunteers who work as adoption counselors and return phone calls.

Reviewing all the farm animals that are currently available for adoption, including poultry such as chickens, ducks and geese, pot belly pigs, sheep, goats, and any other animals available at this time. Review details about as many of the animals as possible, their rescue stories, any health issues, and what type of home they are seeking.

• Adopting: How do you adopt an animal, is there a cost, how to you learn about their care, what if it doesn’t work out, how do I pick out the animal I’d like to adopt?
• What does the adoption contract require?
• What are the requirements of adopting an animal?
• Fostering: What are the benefits of fostering an animal?
• What is an emergency foster home versus a regular foster home?
• Who pays for the expenses when you foster an animal?
• How do I sign up as a foster home?
• Can I only foster certain types of animals?
• What if I decide I want to keep my foster animal?

We will review horse care for beginners, reviewing all the basics, talking about nutrition, proper care for a horse in our cold winter months, what constitutes a good quality hay, proper shelter, safe fencing, hoof care, teeth floating, the importance of vaccinations and de-worming your horse, reviewing the realistic cost of owning a horse.

In this segment, we will review the adoption process and concentrate on talking about the horses that are currently available for adoption. We will touch base on the various equine rescue programs, such as the Pasture Pal Program, the Ridable Program, and the Amish Horse Retirement Program. We will review individual horses and talk about their rescue stories, their progress, their health issues, and what type of home they need. We will answer questions such as: What do we look for in an adoptive horse home?  How do I apply to adopt a rescued horse? Will someone visit my facilities and help answer my questions about this horse adoption?
