 Adopted Horses

Katrina: 17.1 hands tall black Percheron mare, will be evaluated at the Equine Hospital next week, appears healthy and sounds, a very stocky build and very sweet with people! Currently in foster care. Adoption Fee: Disclosed after medical evaluation ***ADOPTED***

Luke is an eight year old big, beautiful, awesome-looking Belgian draft gelding who is being returned to our program. Luke has slight effects leftover after being diagnosed with Wobbles Syndrome. Though we are listing Luke as a Pasture Pal, Luke has had 90 days professional riding training and has a lot of potential as a trail horse (he seriously LOVES to be worked and ridden). With constant and daily exercise, Luke had muscled-up very nicely and is a quick learner. Luke was schooled in Dressage, and would thrive in a family who is willing to work with his impairment and help him to be exercised regularly. Due to Wobbles, we are required to list Luke as a Pasture Pal only. Previous adoptive owner is also willing to provide an additional 30 days training with equine trainer Ken Aberegg of Alliance for Luke's new owner. Adoption Fee: Waived to the right home!

Avistar is a sweet, fuzzy black warmblood colt (Standardbred/Percheron cross). Currently in training at Ken Aberegg's in Alliance — is doing excellent with learning some ground manners and to stand and lead politely and safely. Avistar is healthy, sound, and will take a little time to gain some weight due to malnutrition. After a medical evaluation at Equine Specialty Hospital, his future is bright and he is even a candidate for dressage or light jumping.  Adoption Fee: $450.00 ***ADOPTED***

Nevada: The perfect horse! This good-looking 10 year old Appaloosa gelding will be someone's perfect trail horse! Nevada has been given the vet's blessing to do some basic and light trail riding. Nevada needs to continue to build up his back and leg muscles, so regular daily work would suite this boy just fine. An advanced beginner or intermediate rider should be fine with this sweetheart, who listens and pays careful attention to his rider. Once he sheds out his furry winter coat, we will get to witness his true shiny chocolate brown color! Standing at about 15.1 hands, Nevada can safely and comfortably carry the weight of an average person. He is fantastic with other horses! Spring and riding season is finally here, so don't miss this chance to adopt a precious, wonderful trail horse who is trained and ready to go!
Adoption Fee: $600. ADOPTED

Polly
Token

Polly & Token: This pair of lovable, older Quarter horses have recently been returned to the Happy Trails rescue program due to personal family issues of their owner. Polly, a petite 27 year old Palomino mare, and Token, a 24 year old stocky chestnut gelding, are very devoted to each other. Polly deals daily with arthritis, and Token is 50% blind in one eye and slightly more so in the other eye.
The home that chooses them as part of their family truly has to have a big and caring heart and a lot of love to offer to this wonderful, sweet, grandma and grandpa horse couple. The two of them still have a lot of love to give and a lot of life lessons to teach. They, of course, are not ridable due to their age and health conditions — not even to give a lead-line ride to small children. They are Pasture Pals in the strictest sense of the word.   Adoption Fee  $250.00 for the pair  ADOPTED

Buttercup  A sweet, 26 year old Palomino mare is seeking her ideal home with a big pasture and a run-in. Buttercup has heaves, a condition similar to asthma in people, and staying in an enclosed stall overnight with dry and dusty bedding is not in her best interest. Buttercup loves people, loves attention, and loves to be brushed and groomed! She is feisty and happy and loves life, and can't wait to find a loving home and big pasture where she can leisurely nap in the summer sun or hang out under a cool shade tree. Buttercup is not ridable due to heaves, but will make lucky person a terrific pet! Adoption Fee: $250

Dancer: An 18 year old gorgeous Paint mare seeking a home as a Pasture Pal. This beautiful brown and white Quarter horse has ringbone (and some arthritis), which keeps her from being healthy enough to ride. She is, however, sweet and loving, enjoys being brushed and groomed, and gets along well with other horses. She does like to be the horse in charge. She's a somewhat stocky mare at only 14.1 hands tall. She will make a wonderful companion for some lucky horse.   Adoption Fee  $250.00

Rusty
Surefoot

Rusty & Surefoot: These two boys are seeking a home where they can stay together, and are being adopted through the Amish Horse Retirement Program. Rusty is a 17 year old extremely handsome chestnut Standardbred gelding who has been the family riding horse for his Amish family, and requires an experienced rider. Rusty occasionally experiences a slight lameness which may be due to some arthritis or possibly a light case of navicular. Surefoot is a fun and spirited 24 year old brown, roan and white paint pony gelding who has been broke to both ride and drive, but he has not been worked for some time. The horse and pony are great buddies, but it is not a problem to ride Rusty away from Surefoot when it's time to go out on the trail. Surefoot occasionally exhibits a slight cough, which could be the result of heaves (a type of horse asthma). Since these two precious and friendly creatures are being adopted directly from their Amish home (we currently have no room at the sanctuary), there will be no adoption fee. Rather, the adoption agreement will include that their new guardians will have them both vet checked, vaccinated and any necessary blood tests or x-rays taken within two weeks of their arrival at their new home. Rusty and Surefoot both still have lots of life, energy and rides left in them — Rusty simply can't serve his Amish family in the capacity that he needs to, and we would like to help find these guys a home where they can continue to be best friends!    ADOPTED

Grandpa Walton A 29 year young Quarter horse gelding, recovered from malnutrition and starvation. Sweet and kind to work with, and has lots of life left in him. He is in the Pasture Pal Program due to an old knee injury to his front leg. His favorite treats are apples and carrots chopped up in little pieces so he can chew them better (not a lot of teeth!). He gets along great with other horses and will make a truly wonderful companion horse! He can offer lead-lines rides for small children. Excellent ground manners. Happy to have a second chance at life, he is looking for a guardian angel to give him a loving retirement home.

ADOPTED

Madison   At 18 years old, this gorgeous little black mare can do it all! Buggy, ride, AND she has excellent ground manners!!! She loads, leads, bathes, ties, lunges - you name it, she does it! At only 14.1 hands tall, Madison will need a smaller to medium sized rider (about 150lbs. tops), as she has a smaller structure and is rather petite. Madison recently completed 30 days of professional training with Ken Aberegg, compliments of a training grant made possible by the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust through Key Bank. I can't say enough nice things about Madison — she is sound and healthy, and should do well with an advanced beginner. Continued professional training with her new owner may be possible through the training grant. Madison would make a fantastic horse for some older kids — great on trails!

ADOPTED

Dallas (Right)

Dallas  An 18 year old gorgeous bay Arabian gelding. About 15 hands tall, Dallas has the most perfect ground manners. He loves attention, and is very sweet. He has and will continue to receive professional training with equine trainer, Ken Aberegg, through the Equine Basic Training Program - a grant awarded to Happy Trails through the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust through Key Bank. At this time, Dallas will require an experienced rider, though we are continuing to work with him. Complimentary lessons and training may be able to be included in his adoption through the grant. Dallas is ok'd for basic trail riding or walk/trot, and has a rider weight limit of under 200lbs. He is completely sound and healthy, though at some point in his life he did experience a slight case of founder. He does not currently wear shoes. I can't say enough wonderful things about this handsome creature!

ADOPTED

Lady Jane  A gentle giant, big, shiny black and beautiful, this 19 year young mare is the perfect horse! She thoroughly enjoys slow and gentle trail rides, and is great for an advanced beginner. She does prefer to be with other draft horses if possible, and needs a nice big stall since she enjoys her naps and likes to sleep laying down. Lady Jane is healthy and sound, with the typical draft issue of having some EPSM (a lack-of-muscle-tone disease) which often affects larger horses. There is some muscle atrophy in her rear quarters, but does not affect her ability to enjoy a nice, leisurely walk down the trail - she does not even need to ride with a bit! Lady Jane is definitely looking for the perfect home and family who will love her and spoil her rotten! She will be required to be kept on her healthy diet of Senior feed, beet pulp, oil in her diet, and a joint supplement to help any arthritis she may be experiencing due to her age.

ADOPTED

Festus is a 22 year old Shetland pony with a very old knee injury. He seems to get around just fine, and is an absolute love to work with. He is friendly and sweet, and gets along well with other horses and ponies. He will make a great companion pony, since he is not ridable due to his cripple leg. The little chocolate brown sweetheart is seeking just the right home where he can retire in peace and comfort, and get LOTS of attention!

ADOPTED

Cherokee Princess  is a 16 year old Palomino mini-mare who is the cutest thing around. However, she has recently been diagnosed with heaves, a condition similar to asthma in people. She is now required to have in/out privileges of a run in or stall, and cannot be confined in any area due to her breathing difficulties. When kept in a stall and the air is dry or dusty, she develops a terrible cough. To get her condition under control she was originally placed on medication, but does not require any at this time as long as her living conditions are right for her. Cherokee may be able to give lead-line rides to very small kids, but due to heaves, will not be able to do any strenuous constant work. She does nip occasionally, but is generally sweet and loving.

ADOPTED

Cowboy  A 17 year old black and white Paint gelding; ridable with limitations and a person who understands his health issues; has clogged tear ducts which will probably need "blown out" by a vet three to four times per year; has severe arthritis in his hocks, and will need injections in these joints to make him comfortable; is currently losing his eyesight and rather spooky at certain things; has been given a 150lb. rider weight limit for his comfort due to his rear-quarter lameness issues; is seeking a quiet back-yard home where he can mostly retire and adjust to his loss of vision

ADOPTED

Shana Frost: A 22 year old bay Thoroughbred mare. Sweet and loving and a joy to work with! She has been given the vet ok for a light rider weighing about 130-140lbs, for her comfort. Shana is now in excellent health and has gained back close to 200lbs. after suffering from being severely malnourished. She is an excellent trail horse and has had children ride her safely. Shana is currently in foster care in Geauga County — to make an appointment with an adoption counselor to go visit Shana, please call the sanctuary at (330) 296-5914.

ADOPTED

Dusty Bob (Formerly Bobby) just arrived at Happy Trails on Friday, December 3, seeking a retirement home. He is THE sweetest, most lovable 22 year old Standardbred gelding, and quite handsome I might add! This dark bay beauty has very kind eyes and a matching disposition.
For those of you who haven't heard, Bobby was brought to our attention by Kelly Bender, a friend of ours at Weaver Leather in Mt. Hope, Ohio. Kelly alerted us to Bobby's predicament and asked if we could help.    Read Full Story

ADOPTED

Lady Jane:  A 19 year old black Percheron mare (18 hands tall). She was an Amish plow horse for most of her life and also used as a brood mare. She is in good health except for lack of muscle and some atrophy in her hip areas. She has been given the vet OK for some basic trail and back-yard riding work, or some light recreational buggy work. She is sweet, kind, and gentle, and loves attention. She enjoys being groomed by someone sitting on her back and brushing her. Lady Jane is going to make a wonderful horse for a lucky family who would like to add a calm, gentle giant to their horse family. Like all drafts, she requires a (minimum) 12'x12' stall and electric fencing, and tons of daily turn-out for exercise. She has now been put on a commercial pelleted diet that is appropriate and healthy nutrition for draft horses, as well as having oil added to her diet to see if we can help with her overall condition and muscle development. Often times basic vegetable oil (1 cup per thousand pounds once daily) can be added to the diet of a draft horse to help prevent the lack-of-muscle tone disease called EPSM. If you feel you would qualify as an approved home and are seriously interested in adopting Lady Jane, give us a call to arrange a visit at (330) 296-5914. She is currently a resident of the sanctuary itself (not in foster care).

ADOPTED

Rocky is a yearling Percheron colt who is recovering nicely from a neglect situation and malnutrition. His back tendons were weak due to constant stall confinement, and he is building them back up with regular exercise. He is a sweetheart to work with, and has a ton of potential. He has a wonderful personality and is great with other horses. He's going to be a big boy, and should be able to work as a rideable walk/trot kind of guy or light buggy work, but will not be able to plow. Rocky resides at the sanctuary at Happy Trails.

ADOPTED

Luke: A 3 year old Belgian gelding; 17.3 hands, gorgeous blond color with white mane and tail; a friendly boy who gets along great with other horses; very mellow and has kind eyes; thrives on attention; diagnosed with Wobbles, a neurological disease affecting stability and balance; he sometimes has difficulty knowing where he is placing his back feet as he turns or walks; he appears normal watching him trot or canter; can never be ridden, but will make a wonderful companion for another horse; will need to go to an experienced handler; the ideal situation for Luke will be one where he has in-out privileges of a barn or stall so that an handler doesn't have to walk him through mud or snow due to his balance issues; Luke is truly a special-needs horse and will need a new owner with a lot of compassion; Luke is otherwise healthy and happy and has lots of love to give.

ADOPTED

Festus   A 19 year old chocolate Shetland-mix gelding. This adorable pony is in our Pasture Pal Program (non-rideable) due to an old knee injury which caused his front right leg to bow in. Though he has a slight limp, he doesn't allow this handicap to slow him down! He's all attitude and cute as a button!

ADOPTED

Dixie    Slowly gaining weight from near starvation, this sweet and trusting 24 year old larger-sized pony, a quarter/mix mare, is very lovable. Her beauty comes from within, since she still show scars from rope burns and halter rubs from being tied for too long and has a pronounced swayback. She loves attention and is very gentle.   Arabella: 11 year old Hackney mare has been returned to the Happy Trails Pasture Pal Program due her owners health. This beautiful bay mare can give lead-line rides for the kids, but cannot carry the weight of an adult. She had recovered from a broken hip, and has healed with one hip slightly higher than the other. She is very independent, and deserves a loving home where she can get the attention and care that she needs. Gets along well with other horses.

ADOPTED

Dutchess is a 10 year old Standardbred mare with Uveitis in both eyes (she is completely blind). Uveitis is a degenerative eye disease, and Dutchess recently underwent an operation at Aurora Equine Specialty Hospital to have the first eye removed, and she had a prosthesis implanted under her lid to give the impression of an eye still being there. She is a very confident horse and trusts people. She walks well and trots on a lead line, and can still carry a rider at a walk under saddle. she is a beautiful bay with a wonderful personality. You can read her story in the Beacon Journal article by Connie Bloom

ADOPTED

Zeus is a 9 year old black Percheron gelding about 17.1 hands tall. He is available for adoption as a trail horse but also knows how to pull. He had his back right hoof x-rayed and it shows that everything is in proper order, but his hoof wall grows out separated from the hoof, possibly due to untreated founder at a younger age. This has not caused him any lameness, and the vet has determined that he is sound to work. He needs regular hoof trims to keep the mis-shapen hoof in check, and as all drafts, will need to be kept on a feeding program consistant with the special dietary needs of a draft horse. Zeus is a big boy who will need an experienced handler and rider. He loves to be groomed and fussed over, and gets along very well with all other horses (and even the cow). You can meet Zeus at the Happy Trails Sanctuary.

ADOPTED

Sequoia is a 7 year old Standardbred mare who is blind in one eye and has been treated for EPM, a neurological disease. She recovered 80% and has been given the ok to continue to drive. She cannot however be ridden safely. Sequoia is a sweetheart, has excellent ground manners and is wonderful with other horses. Sequoia currently resides at the sanctuary at Happy Trails.

ADOPTED

Corona is a 15 year old Standardbred mare who worked hard all her life as an Amish buggy horse. She is recovering from malnutrition and Anemia, and is recovering very nicely. Though she knows how to drive, she has never been ridden, so we are working with her gradually, and she will need an adoptive home willing to work with her under saddle. She has great ground manners and is accepting the saddle well. She is now becoming full of energy as she recuperates, and is overcoming the Anemia with proper nutrition, rest and care. Wonderful potential as a trail horse and backyard family horse. Corona is currently residing at Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary.

ADOPTED

Little Erma is in her late 20's, a butterscotch mare who is in good health. She has an udder that will fill with fluid due to an old injury. We had an ultrasound done on the udder, and it shows scar tissue from a previous trauma to the area. Antibiotics were tried for this condition, but did not alter the situation. Though the enlarged udder is permanent, it does not seem to be a problem for her or cause her any discomfort. Erma needs other horses who will be nice to her, and you can visit her at the Happy Trails sanctuary.

ADOPTED

Jojo, a 2 year old mini horse that we just had gelded, and what a sweetheart! He is lovable and gentle. His diagnosis is that he had Dwarfism characteristics, which include an enlarged forehead and wide nose . He also has a crippled back hoof which will need corrective trimming on a regular basis. His hooves in general were severely neglected, and we are working on getting his front hooves slowly back in shape also. Due to his hoof issues, he will not be able to pull a cart or handle any work. He is searching for a family who will love him as a pet. This little guy is SO loving — would you consider adopting him?

ADOPTED

Scotch  A 2 year old Quarter horse, newly gelded; 15 hands; ready for training; healthy but needs to gain a bit more weight yet; needs to work on polite ground manners; a very handsome boy; TONS of potential; no limitations, no health restrictions.

ADOPTED

Raynee is a 22 year old grade Quarter horse mare. She is considered a solid Paint, sorrel with a few spots of white markings and three white socks.
She is an ex-barrel racer, and in excellent health for her age. We are slowly working on building up her back and leg muscles with easy ground work and light riding. The vet gave her a rider weight limit of 150lb.. She need's a little re-training and a some patience to become a calm back-yard trail horse, but she is a very willing leaner. She has been excellent to ride, but needs to learn to slow down and not want to run.
She loves attention and being brushed and groomed. Raynee deserves a loving family who will allow her to spend her senior years with them, doing some light riding. She is, of course, up-to-date on all her shots, has had her teeth recently floated, is on the Happy Trails eight week rotational worming schedule, and has her hooves trimmed very six weeks.
Her requirements are that she will not be adopted out to a boarding facility, but will be looking for a back-yard home for her senior years. She would like to have a large stall, and daily turn-out of at least eight hours per day (she needs the exercise for her little bit of arthritis and rear legs that have a habit of stocking up on her). She is on Senior feed (3½ lbs.) twice daily, a joint supplement, and has access to unlimited hay. If you would like to consider adopting Raynee and opening your heart and home to a rescued horse, please give us a call at (330) 296-5914.

ADOPTED
9/05/2005

Royal  A handsome 12 year old Standardbred gelding who was treated for EPM, a neurological disease that affects stability and balance. Though he recovered to a degree, he will not recover to the point where he can be ridden or pull a buggy. Royal is seeking a home where he retire as a buddy for another horse. We can't say enough nice things about this boy — he is calm, polite, weel-mannered, easy to work with, very loving, and a joy to have around. Some lucky horse (and owner!) is going to have a wonderful companion in Royal!

ADOPTED

Darlin' Dixie: A black beauty at 16 hands tall and only 15 years old. Due to bowed tendons on her front legs and weak suspensory tendons on her rear legs, this Standard mare cannot hold the weight of a rider nor is she capable of pulling a cart. Dixie is an absolute love to work with — she does it all! She leads, loads, ties, grooms well, eat politely, and is very sweet and kind. She loves attention and gets along fabulously with all other horses. Dixie was brought into Happy Trails on August 18th, 2006, through our Amish Horse Retirement Program. Dixie lived in the Fredericksburg area of Ohio, and is seeking a loving, caring home where she can retire in peace and comfort as your sweetheart and as a great companion for another horse. ADOPTED

Cindy Lou Who: A stunning dapple bay, Cindy Lou Who stands proudly at 15 hands tall and is 15 years young. Cindy Lou Who has severe allergies that cause inflammation and swelling of her eyes. She is on (and will probably need to be on daily for the rest of her life) an eye ointment to help alleviate the symptoms of her allergies. After a period of rest and recuperation here at Happy Trails, the vet has determined Cindy Lou Who sound to ride. Cindy was accepted into the Happy Trails Amish Horse Retirement Program and arrived at the sanctuary on August 18th, 2006. She was used as a buggy horse and also a brood mare, and came from the Fredericksburg area. Cindy has never been ridden, and will need to be re-trained to ride. We have had phenomenal success with the Standardbreds that come through our equine rescue program in that the buggy horses that are sound enough to ride have all become wonderful trail mounts! We're positive that with some time and patience, Cindy will be a fantastic trail mare also!   ADOPTED
