About Jolie, Dulce, and Dozer

Jolie and Dulce came in together from a neglect situation. Both were severely overweight and had overgrown hooves. Jolie is a social butterfly and loves to greet people in hopes of getting a belly rub or a treat. Dulce is a little more reserved. We aren't sure of her exact age, but she seems to be a senior. She suffers from arthritis and will need to be on medication for the rest of her life. These ladies have been best friends and have spent their lives together so they will need to be adopted together.

Dozer came to us from a separate neglect situation. He is a very active, vocal pig. He is always out and about at the farm looking to see what is going on. Since coming to Happy Trails he has bonded closely with Jolie and Dulce. They are best friends! They like to take naps in the sun together and cuddle up in their shelter at night.

You will be stunned by yesterday's short radio interview with National Geographic staff writer, Bryan Christy. Please listen to it.  It will literally only take 4 minutes, 10 seconds of your time.  I was shocked to learn China is now going to build the world's largest ivory carving shop!  And TRAIN college students to learn the elephant ivory carving "art".  I too was stunned when even I thought I was beyond being shocked.

And bless you for standing up for the elephant by sharing with your members.  And yes, you do have permission to use the article and photos about the Chad massacre.  Animal Lovers the world over need to see that and take action with the Letter to the Ambassador — and maybe we can stop China from exterminating the elephant from Africa. But as you will hear on the interview, it may already be too late.

I think you will be pleased to know that a library has just stepped forward to copy the ivory letters for their patrons  to send to the  Chinese Ambassador to ban ivory sales forever.

The Elefence Board and I thank you for getting the word out.  Wouldn't it be great if we could get thousands of letters arriving on the Ambassador's doorstep!  I would imagine we'd get the national news media on this ivory issue.

A Rotary Club has just called and wants to help get letters out from their members.

I think I already told you about a Columbus school stepping forward to send letters.

P.S. Personally, I think the public needs to see this, even if it is not pretty.  This is the only way one gets ivory these days.  Massacre.  I could weep not only for the elephants ( those who weren't even born yet) but our children of the future who may never see an elephant family in the wild.

About Practical and Willow

Practical came from a neglect situation with three of our other farm pigs up for adoption. Temple, Practical, Fifer and Fiddler are all like family and ideally we would prefer that each of them leaves with at least one of their friends.  When Practical came to Happy Trails, he had to be treated for an upper respiratory infection and also had to have ear tags removed. He is the baby of the four and a very nice little pig.

Update:  Cal has become great friends with Willow.  Willow is a wonderful resident at Happy Trails.  She can leap tall fences and was the reason for some recent updates!  We would love for Willow and Cal to be adopted together.  This lovely pair can be your charge and will offer many special moments to cherish.

About Theodore

On Monday, February 25th, Happy Trails assisted the Portage APL with the rescue of this adorable mini-horse.  We have named him Theodore and have whisked him to the Sanctuary to put him under the direct care of a licensed veterinarian and a professional blacksmith who specializes in sever hoof neglect.

Theodore has gone from a flooded, icy field where he was unable to take one step to search for shelter to the respite of a straw-bedded stall, much needed attention, and a surrounding of friends at Happy Trails.

Keep your eye on Theodore.  As the pending charges pan out and he is signed over, he will be a much sought after addition to an adoptive home.  Inquire now, and in the meantime, send your donations, support and love.

Update:  Theodore has been hard at work to recover from his neglectful situation.  He has had two trimmings and is already able to walk more freely and with less pain.  X-rays showed irreparable changes to his coffin bones on all four feet due to founder.  However, he will be able to live a happy comfortable life.  He will just need to be monitored more closely for signs to make sure his situation does not get worse. As with any pony of his size, measures must be taken to ensure they do not receive an overabundance of grass or grain.  A horse's system cannot process excess amounts which is what leads to founder and the resulting laminitis.
