About Rosebud

Rosebud came to us from Cleveland. She had been bought as a gift for somebody for Christmas. A farm pig is definitely not a good house pet in the city. This adorable girl is very social and loves attention. She gets along with everybody that she meets. Rosebud is looking for her forever home where she can be a large outdoor pet. She is such a sweetheart and would make a great addition to somebody's home.

About Jolie, Dulce, and Dozer

Jolie and Dulce came in together from a neglect situation. Both were severely overweight and had overgrown hooves. Jolie is a social butterfly and loves to greet people in hopes of getting a belly rub or a treat. Dulce is a little more reserved. We aren't sure of her exact age, but she seems to be a senior. She suffers from arthritis and will need to be on medication for the rest of her life. These ladies have been best friends and have spent their lives together so they will need to be adopted together.

Dozer came to us from a separate neglect situation. He is a very active, vocal pig. He is always out and about at the farm looking to see what is going on. Since coming to Happy Trails he has bonded closely with Jolie and Dulce. They are best friends! They like to take naps in the sun together and cuddle up in their shelter at night. We would love to keep this trio of pigs together.

About Practical and Willow

Practical came from a neglect situation with three of our other farm pigs up for adoption. Temple, Practical, Fifer and Fiddler are all like family and ideally we would prefer that each of them leaves with at least one of their friends.  When Practical came to Happy Trails, he had to be treated for an upper respiratory infection and also had to have ear tags removed. He is the baby of the four and a very nice little pig.

Update:  Cal has become great friends with Willow.  Willow is a wonderful resident at Happy Trails.  She can leap tall fences and was the reason for some recent updates!  We would love for Willow and Cal to be adopted together.  This lovely pair can be your charge and will offer many special moments to cherish.

About Theodore

On Monday, February 25th, Happy Trails assisted the Portage APL with the rescue of this adorable mini-horse.  We have named him Theodore and have whisked him to the Sanctuary to put him under the direct care of a licensed veterinarian and a professional blacksmith who specializes in sever hoof neglect.

Theodore has gone from a flooded, icy field where he was unable to take one step to search for shelter to the respite of a straw-bedded stall, much needed attention, and a surrounding of friends at Happy Trails.

Keep your eye on Theodore.  As the pending charges pan out and he is signed over, he will be a much sought after addition to an adoptive home.  Inquire now, and in the meantime, send your donations, support and love.

Update:  Theodore has been hard at work to recover from his neglectful situation.  He has had two trimmings and is already able to walk more freely and with less pain.  X-rays showed irreparable changes to his coffin bones on all four feet due to founder.  However, he will be able to live a happy comfortable life.  He will just need to be monitored more closely for signs to make sure his situation does not get worse. As with any pony of his size, measures must be taken to ensure they do not receive an overabundance of grass or grain.  A horse's system cannot process excess amounts which is what leads to founder and the resulting laminitis.

About our Cleveland Rescued Cockfighting Roosters

Happy Trails assisted Cleveland Animal Control with rescuing roosters from a cockfighting situation on March 8th, 2013.  “Lenny” (shown above) is among the majority of the rescued roosters who enjoy being held and petted. "Sam"  (pictured below, right) is typical of the roosters now signed over to Happy Trails.  His comb and his wattles had been cut off. The black that you see around his face is dried blood.

It is unconscionable to force an otherwise docile animal to fight for its life in a fight to the death.  Cockfighting is sadly prevalent in every county in Ohio.  We can only assist with these cases when we have the space and the resources to do so.  By adopting a rooster, you are actually saving two!  Please consider adopting one of the 34 roosters from this rescue.  Click this link for more photos from this rescue and more details about cockfighting — March 8th Cleveland Rooster Rescue

About Zagato

This noble guy is about 200 lbs. underweight and has some type of issue going on with his hind quarters. He needs his teeth 'floated' (a term used to describe necessary equine dental procedure of filing a horse's teeth), he needed to be de-wormed, he will need vaccinated, and he will have his hooves trimmed this next week.  Dr. Holly Troche, our equine chiropractor, will be visiting Zagato soon to see what types of issues are going on with this spine and hind quarters. He is now on a re-feeding/rehabilitation program, where he is fed small amounts of grain at multiple intervals throughout the day to get his stomach used to receiving grain regularly. This sweet boy will be available for adoption as a Pasture Pal (non-ridable) pet after he is on the road to recovery.

Update:  Since having his teeth floated, Zagato seems to be flourishing.  He is spending time slowly gaining his weight back and has already regained a brighter look about him.  He is waiting for his home and the love he deserves.

About Roy

Royal Crown, "Roy", is a horse from our Amish Retirement program.  The Standardbred is the preferred breed for an Amish buggy.  You may have known that but, do you know why?  "Both the Standardbred and Saddlebred have the unique inborn ability to trot more readily than canter or run at a fast pace. They’d rather high step in second gear anytime than gallop over the hill into the sunset." (marsha hubler.com) This is an interesting fact and also can be a neat feature in a riding horse.  Roy is sturdy and loyal.  Give this guy a place to prove it for more than meals and housing.  Let him prove it for love and treats and attention.

Princeton is another buggy horse who arrived through our Amish Retirement Program.   Did you know about two-thirds of the Amish live in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana (National Geographic, web) Princeton has given years of service proudly leading his buggy for his Amish family.  He simply could not go the distance any longer and came to us at Happy Trails.  Buggy horses are smart and well trained and this guy will make someone a great trail riding companion.  He deserves his retirement as he has earned every day of it.

About Petunia and Pandy

These two adorable gals both came form the same place in Medina County – another didn’t-seem-to-be-legitimate “rescue organization”  was shutting down and couldn’t care for the animals any longer.  Happy Trails assistance was requested by the local APL.  Both pigs' hooves were extremely long and they were terribly overweight when they first came in. Now they snuggle up under the warm lamps in their donated blankets, safe and sound.  If possible we would like for Petunia and Pandy to be adopted together.

About Sadie

Angela was walking down the narrow aisle of a row of horses waiting to be run through the auction as a young Amish boy backed a small horse out of a tie stall. The little mare was standing next to Mack, a big Belgian gelding (who we would later rescue) that was shaking terribly . The divider of the stall was falling over and thepoor little mare was standing under the divider. As the boy backed the mare up and turned her toward me, I gasped in horror when I saw what appeared to be her eye protruding out of it’s socket. I called to Angela who was a little way down the aisle. “Hey, look at this one’s eye.” The boy turned the mare again to head in the opposite direction, and Angela, too, clearly saw the bulging eye with material coming out of it. The horse was being lead toward the auction ring as we stared at the boy and the mare. “Go buy that horse”, I called to Angela. There was no doubt in my mind that the injured mare would be purchased by the meat buyers. I saw no other rescue groups there that day, and the sweet little horse didn’t stand a chance. Not being able to see and in a great deal of pain, there was no way that she would have been able to survive a multiple-day trip in an overcrowded trailer to a Mexican slaughter plant. She would surely go down in the trailer and be trampled to death by the bigger, stronger horses. Angela followed the young man to the auction ring. He walked the horse in front of the crowd and the auctioneer introduced her as “having a bad eye”. (Talk about an understatement!) Angela offered the auctioneer $25 for the horse, and the bidding closed. The sweet mare was ours! She was safe. Back at Happy Trails, a vet determined that her eye can be removed safely and the horse can have a good quality of life. Sadie had her eye removed on Saturday, October 20th is resting comfortably in an outdoor stall that she is sharing with a small, swayback Welsh pony mare (another rescued horse who had her baby removed from her at the auction).

About Sandradee

Registered Name – Sandra's Sweetie

Sandradee is a 14-year-old bay Thoroughbred mare who was one of ten horses rescued from a situation of neglect in the Village Of Orange in June of 2010. She lives up to her name and is quite a sweetie!  She gets a lot of compliments on being such a beautiful looking horse.
Sandradee's current evaluation is as follows: She can be ridden at a walk, trot or canter. She is in very good physical condition, is a good learner and athletic. She longes well, can sidepass, and can turn on the forehand or turn on the hindquarters.  She stands well while grooming or when being handled by a vet or farrier.
For the past 18 months that she has been in foster care she has had a weekly training session under saddle under the supervision of a professional trainer (Ken Aberegg).  She responds well to a soft touch, and would be a wonderful partner for an intermediate level rider.

About Diamond

A team of grey Percherons, one mare and one gelding, were ground-driven into the auction ring. The mare’s back right leg was clearly about three times as big as it should be. The bidding began. When the bidding ended with a private individual getting the highest bid, the auctioneer asked the buyer the usual question. “Times two?” This meant, do you want to pay that same amount for both horses or do you just want to buy one? The buyer only wanted the sound gelding, so the lame mare was immediately placed back up for auction. Bidding began again, with only a meat buyer raising his eyebrows to bid on her. We decided to step in and save the mare with the leg injury. Her life was only worth $175. We plan to have radiographs taken of the leg to pinpoint the source of the injury and to see what steps can be taken to provide her with treatment. She is a sweet mare, very docile, easy to work with, gentle, and was announced by the auctioneer to be broke to all farm machinery and to be a good worker. After her recovery period, we anticipate that she will be a good trail horse and easy to work with under saddle. I believe she’ll respond well to a calm voice and a gentle hand.

UPDATE: Our hopes for Diamond have come true and she is doing great!  The radiographs did not show anything out of the ordinary. She has been given the ok to do light riding as long as she doesn’t come up lame or uncomfortable. Some days her leg may “weep” and drain, causing her discomfort. Often she doesn’t even limp with it.

About Woody

We originally saw the handsome Belgian gelding standing in a narrow auction stall. As we peered over the top rail, we saw the side of his back hoof, the entire side, sticking straight up in the air. It looked painful, and he held the hoof up as he balanced on his other three legs. We wrote his number down, determined to watch for him when he was run through the auction. Many times I am afraid that we’ll lose a horse in bidding to a meat buyer. Often they’ll run the price up when they realize that a rescue group is bidding on a horse, just because they can. Number 1488 was coming up next, and we watched as the big guy lumbered into the arena with a limp. It was obvious he was having difficulty walking, and no-one wanted him. He couldn’t work, and therefore, he was a useless piece of machinery. The value of his life? An $85 winning auction bid. He limped away and was taken back to the tie stall, where he would stand until we could load him up in one of our rescue trailers. Woody will need his hoof x-rayed and will most likely need corrective shoeing and trimming to remedy the injury to his back hoof. Otherwise, Woody now is in good spirits, friendly, easy to work with and should make a wonderful trail horse as his hoof issue heals. Please consider sponsoring Woody.

About Editon

A very handsome Standardbred gelding was brought onto the auction block. He could “do it all” the announcer claimed!  He was traffic-safe, kid-safe, good for the women, and an all around great buggy horse. I was sure that someone would pick him for their family horse. The auctioneer called for bids, but received only silence from the crowd. I couldn’t believe it! The horse appeared to be sound, sane, and simply beautiful. The only thing against him was his age – he was said to be 20-years-old. However, for a 20-year-old buggy horse, he was in great shape! The beginning bid was dropped down to $50, and a meat buyer jumped in. I couldn’t let this wonderful, gentle horse go to the killers. In the end we brought him home — home to Happy Trails.

What was his life worth? A mere $75.

I was completely amazed that such a great horse was slipping through the cracks. I shouldn’t have been surprised.  Many healthy horses go to slaughter every week. Editon has a purpose yet in his life, and there is some person’s life he is destined to change.  His life has meaning, and he needed a name to reflect his importance. “Editon” is an Omaha Native American name meaning “standing as a sacred object”. Editon is probably the most gentle horse I have ever had the pleasure of rescuing. He is obedient, quite, docile, unafraid of anything and will definitely make someone an incredible trail horse and can be ridden lightly by a lighter rider.

About Billionaire

Looking down the aisle, we saw the hind quarters of a big Belgian sticking out into the aisleway, shaking uncontrollably. We went up to the giant horse and noticed that he could not stand still. He legs were shaking and he was trembling all over. He was rocking back, pulling at the lead that tied him to the wall. I guessed that he had a neurological disease, and was hoping to rescue him to save him from going down in the trailer bound for the slaughterhouse. We wrote down his number, and my heart broke for the handsome boy who was obviously in distress. Number 1265 came up on the auction billboard above the callers booth, and out came the trembling horse. When he was being lead about, his trembling wasn’t as visible. He was declared to be “good broke” and could work with any farm machinery. I jumped in on the bidding. However, an Amish farmer did too, and he seemed determined to buy the horse. I stopped bidding, and the farmer purchased the horse for $250. I approached the new owner, explained who I was and why I stopped bidding against him. I asked him if he saw how unstable the horse was. He admitted that he only saw the shaking of his tail when the horse was lead out of the ring. I gave him my cell phone number and told him to contact me if the horse didn’t work out, for I was sure that the horse was neurologic. A short time later, the Amish gentleman came up to us. “Are you the lady who asked me about the Belgian? There is something definitely wrong with the horse. You can have him if you want him.” He handed me the sale papers. I couldn’t believe it. I thanked him, grateful that he had done the right thing for the horse.

I asked the “officials” in the auction office if I could have a vet come see the horse and put him down if needed. I was told a very stern “no”. I called an Amish friend who lived about a mile away, and asked if I could keep the horse at his farm at least overnight until we could secure a vet. We truly didn’t think the horse would be able to stand for the hour and a half trip back to Happy Trails. He agreed, and we settled the big guy in for the night. The next day we trailered the draft horse a short distance to a local vet clinic, where he was diagnosed with West Niles. A three day treatment was agreed upon, with the understanding that it should help remedy his situation.

Update:  Billionaire's diagnosis of West Nile was incorrect.  He has gone through thorough testing with the Equine Specialty Hospital on Rapids Road in Burton and was tested for an assortment of neurological diseases. All tests came back negative. The concensus was that he was 1) weak from severe malnutrition and 2) had most likely been physically abused.  From what we can tell, his trembling is a fear reaction.  The vet actually said that Billionaire may come back as ridable after some time of being worked with and handled .  As of today, he is doing great — looking for his forever home.  Check out his before and after pictures…
